When Section 25 met Michael Shamberg
Section 25 / Quando Quango live at The Ritz, New York - poster design by Lawrence Weiner

With the upcoming Of Factory New York benefit album for Michael Shamberg due out on xxx, Angie Cassidy and Vin Cassidy recall their meeting:

"We first met Michael Shamberg in 1984, when the band was in the States touring to promote From The Hip. He was an elusive character with a very beautiful girlfriend called Miranda. We really saw more of his assistant Anne Lehman. The From The Hip tour took in the whole of the U.S. and the last show was at The Ritz in New York. Michael had organised a really nice poster for this gig (by Lawrence Weiner). When we arrived in NY for the final show we did not see any of the posters up around town, we thought it a bit weird. We asked Anne about it and she told us they were stacked up in a corner of the FAC US office and nobody had arranged to have them put up! A lovely story and in true Factory tradition."

Of Factory New York [FBN 55] is out on 26 May 2014 and is available to pre-order now via factorybenelux.com.

Thanks to Steven Hankinson for Lawrence Weiner poster photography.

Of Factory New York [FBN 55]
Of Factory New York [FBN 55] for Michael Shamberg

Section 25 is proud to feature on 'Of Factory New York', a new benefit album for Michael Shamberg presented by Factory Benelux and New Order. Shamberg is a long-time friend of New Order and ran the NYC office of Factory Records during its Eighties heyday.

FBN 55 is out 26 May 2014 on CD and double gatefold vinyl formats, Of Factory New York gathers a selection of classic tracks by artists associated with OFNY including the John Robie remix of Yashar by Cabaret Voltaire, Do the Du by A Certain Ratio, Cool As Ice by 52nd Street, Love Tempo by Quando Quango, an exclusive version of Your Silent Face by New Order, recorded live on tour in America in June 1989. Section 25's contribution is the Megamix version of Looking From A Hilltop.

Homegrown American talent also features with Ike Yard, Thick Pigeon, Konk, Anna Domino and deejay/producer Arthur Baker included. Cover art is based on an original 1983 design by Lawrence Weiner.

Unfortunately in 2006 Michael was struck down with highly debilitating mitochondrial disease. All artists featured on Of Factory New York have donated their work free of charge, Factory Benelux will take no profit, and 100% of net revenues will be paid over to the medical trust which takes care of Michael.

"Michael has been with us from the very start," explain New Order. "Initially he was in charge of Factory New York, then became creative producer for all our early videos. He brought our attention to the early works of directors such as Kathryn Bigelow, Gina Birch, Robert Breer, Peter Care, Phillipe Decouffle, Jonathan Demme, Robert Frank, Paula Greiff, Robert Longo, Bailie Walsh and William Wegman. Michael is very ill and needs constant medical attention. We want to help him, and played two fundraising shows in 2011. This new Factory New York compilation album will contribute further financial support towards Michael’s ongoing care."

Reflection (Young Image) Record Store Day 7"
Section 25 - Reflection (Young Image) 7 FBN 53

The next Section 25 single is out on Record Store Day and is a Factory Benelux limited edition (500 copies only) orange vinyl 7-inch of Reflection (Young Image) which is taken from the From The Hip (30th Anniversary Edition) and is a reworked version of the track on side one of the original 1984 album. The b-side is Change as is exclusive to this release.

Record Store Day, 19 April 2014, is of course the day Section 25 plays The Ruby Lounge with Crispy Ambulance and Minny Pops as part of A Factory Night for Record Store Day (tickets still available - more info).

Beth Cassidy calls Reflection a "... whimsical yet heartfelt expression of true love. But strip this back and we discover an inner core which explores the surreal nature of life itself. Even after 30 years there are layers to this song that conceal its true meaning."

The sleeve art direction is based on Peter Saville's original designs for Looking From A Hilltop.

Record Store Day 2014 is the 7th annual celebration of independent record shops in the UK.
